The name Grand Pré, which means “great meadow,” refers to the extensive diked lands in the area. Settlers from Port-Royal moved to Grand Pré in the late 17th century and, copying the successful dike and floodgate system used in Port-Royal, reclaimed the rich marine sediment from the Minas Basin.
